Nissan’s £2 Billion Investment in Electric Car Production

Nissan Unveils £2 Billion Plan for Electric Vehicle Expansion at Sunderland Plant

Nissan, in collaboration with its partners, has announced a bold £2 billion investment plan to manufacture three new electric car models at its Sunderland factory, marking a significant milestone in the shift towards electric vehicle (EV) production.

The Japanese automaker aims to produce electric versions of its popular Qashqai and Juke models, alongside the next generation of the electric Leaf, which is already manufactured at Sunderland. This initiative is expected to secure the jobs of around 6,000 workers directly and generate thousands more across the UK economy.

Central to this plan is the development of a new battery plant — often referred to as a “gigafactory.” Nissan stresses the need for additional battery production capacity to complement both the existing facility adjacent to the car plant and another gigafactory under construction by Nissan’s partner, AESC.

The total investment — which covers facility preparation, supply chain adjustments, workforce training, and the new gigafactory — is anticipated to reach £2 billion.
