Nissan’s £2 Billion Investment in Electric Car Production

Nissan, in collaboration with its partners, has unveiled a bold £2 billion plan to manufacture three electric car models at its Sunderland factory, marking a significant stride towards electric vehicle (EV) production. The Japanese automaker aims to produce electric versions of its popular Qashqai and Juke models, alongside the next generation of the electric Leaf, which is already being manufactured at the Sunderland plant. This initiative is not only anticipated to secure the jobs of around 6,000 workers directly but also generate employment across the broader UK economy.

Crucial to this ambitious plan is the establishment of a new battery plant, commonly referred to as a “gigafactory.” Nissan emphasizes the necessity for additional battery production capacity to complement the existing facility adjacent to the car plant and another gigafactory currently under construction by Nissan’s partner, AESC. The total investment, inclusive of preparing UK facilities, supply chain adjustments, workforce training, and the gigafactory, is expected to reach £2 billion.
