DMG Mori – Open House ‘Technology Days’

Inside DMG MORI’s Technology Days: automation, precision and productivity

Exploring modern machining at DMG MORI Coventry
On 19 May, I (Emma Pine, UK Metals Expo) and Kate Valentine (Southern Manufacturing & Electronics) attended the DMG MORI ‘Technology Days’ open house in Coventry to learn more about modern machining, automation and precision engineering solutions used across manufacturing.

A global leader in advanced CNC and automation
DMG MORI, a global leader in advanced CNC machine tools, automation and digital manufacturing, supplies high-performance technology to sectors including aerospace, automotive, Formula 1, medical, defence, energy and precision engineering. Their systems support smart, Industry 4.0-ready production focused on productivity, precision and efficiency.

First impressions: a professional, hands-on environment
The spacious, immaculate premises and showroom created a highly professional environment, with welcoming staff and fresh Italian coffee from Amore GMA setting a positive tone. The layout allowed visitors to get close to live machining demonstrations, tooling displays and metrology technologies.

Automation, data and the move towards lights-out manufacturing
Our tour began with a Siemens operator and two DMG MORI operators showcasing the DMX 80 U 5-axis machining centre. They highlighted how modern machining is increasingly automated and data-driven, focusing on the full process: tool measurement and design, tooling manufacture and automated pallet systems. Although the pallet automation was not running on the day, the workflow clearly illustrated the move towards lights-out manufacturing with minimal operator intervention, improved precision and greater productivity.

Complex 5-axis machining on the DMU monoBLOCK
We then saw the DMU monoBLOCK, another advanced 5-axis machining centre designed for complex, high-precision components in a single setup. During the demonstration it was machining a complex aluminium part with multiple angled ports and intricate internal features, typical of aerospace, motorsport and high-performance engineering. Its automation, integrated probing and high-speed capabilities help reduce setup times, increase productivity and ensure consistent quality.

Measurement, metrology and process control
Measurement and process control were recurring themes. Mitutoyo demonstrated precision metrology and inspection systems capable of verifying complex geometries and tight tolerances, underlining the importance of accurate measurement in quality assurance and waste reduction. Renishaw presented its Equator gauging system for fast, flexible shop-floor inspection and a wider range of in-machine probing solutions that automate setup, tool measurement and dimensional verification, improving repeatability and reducing downtime.

Cutting tools and toolholding: unlocking productivity
Further conversations with Sandvik emphasised the role of high-performance cutting tools and engineered tooling solutions in improving efficiency and tool life when machining demanding materials, including custom tooling tailored to specific applications. Haimer showcased tool holding, balancing and shrinking technologies that enhance stability, reduce vibration and support precise, high-speed machining while cutting setup times.

Stronger relationships and new opportunities
Overall, the open house was an eye-opening event that reinforced the value of face-to-face interaction. It helped strengthen relationships with existing exhibitors, re-engage lapsed clients and stimulate new business opportunities.
