Marcegaglia Chooses Primetals Technologies for Stainless Steel Meltshop Upgrade in Sheffield, U.K.

Marcegaglia Group, a global leader in steel processing, entered liquid steel production in 2023 through the acquisition of Outokumpu’s stainless steel long products division, including the Sheffield Meltshop. To support future growth, the company awarded Primetals Technologies a major contract to modernise its electric arc furnace (EAF) plant and dedusting system following a productivity optimisation study.

The project will enhance efficiency, productivity, and environmental performance at the Sheffield facility, a leading UK producer of low-carbon stainless steel. Scheduled for completion in mid-2026, the upgrade supports Marcegaglia’s ambition to increase production capacity to more than 500,000 tonnes of stainless steel annually.

A key element of the project is the complete rebuild of the existing EAF with a larger 7.1-metre diameter furnace shell, enabling more efficient scrap charging, improved melting performance, and reduced downtime. Productivity gains will also be achieved through upgrades to the hydraulic system and furnace platform.

Further process improvements include the installation of a dedicated burner system, lime-dolo injection technology, and upgrades to the dedusting system, including water-cooled ducts and a drop-out box for improved furnace pressure control and fume extraction.

The partnership reflects Primetals Technologies’ extensive expertise in stainless steel production and plant modernisation. Selected for its strong track record and technical capabilities, Primetals will help Marcegaglia achieve its operational, environmental, and growth objectives as the company continues to expand its steelmaking activities.
