After completing an undergraduate degree in metallurgy and a PhD in materials science at the University of Birmingham, Claire joined the Doosan Babcock Welding Engineering team. She spent the next 12 years with Doosan Babcock managing and controlling a range of welding activities across operational sites within the UK and around the world. These activities were carried out across the energy industry in nuclear and thermal power as well as petrochemical and process industries. In addition to supporting day to day welding activities, Claire also had responsibility for running a number research/development projects developing novel solutions to bespoke welding problems for clients.
In November 2021 Claire joined the UK Atomic Energy Authority as a welding specialist, she now acts as welding technical authority for the UKAEA and is involved with various programs focusing on the development of welding, manufacturing and materials needs for experimental and prototype fusion reactors.
Claire is a professional member and Fellow of The Welding Institute with chartered engineer status through registration with the Engineering Council. Claire was a member of The Insitute’s Professional Board from 2019 to April 2025 and Chaired this board for 4 years from 2021. Claire is a non-executive director of The Welding Institute and recently became chair of The Insitute’s Council.
